consolidation

The other day I realized that I had five (yes, 5) different blogs going at once. In an effort to keep my ADHD in check, I’ve decided to streamline my life. Cleaning out closets, organizing my home, and getting rid of the 4 extra blogs. I’ll still be blogging about my weight loss, but I’ll also be chatting about other things in my life as well. Just follow this link below and check me out at my main blog (the one I’ve kept for years) – absolute uncertainty.

work hard for the fun

Yes, that is me getting ready to hurl myself down the snow run in a tube. Great fun! And what a fun way to get some exercise this weekend. Not only did I hurl my body down the slope, I also had to walk back up. As I told one kid complaining about the walk up, “you gotta work hard for the fun.” It was all worth it.

Working hard for the fun is sort of like trying to lose weight. For me, the ultimate goal is to be thin and healthy so that I can enjoy doing fun things like snowboarding, surfing, and all those sports that require some serious strength. I also want to have more fun! Life is passing me by and I’m still sitting around watching TV.

Eating has been on track and now I have to get back into my workouts. The sun is coming up earlier and I can feel summer just around the corner. That’s enough to get me out the door and ready for some new challenges.

Allons-y!

i’m back, y’all

Nothing like going home to Texas where I can enjoy some sweet tea and Sonic drive-in. A friend was moving back to Houston and not very excited about it so he asked his Houston friends on Facebook what they liked about the city. All of the responses had to do with food. It may not seem like it but Houston is a culinary capital. World class chefs have come to the city over the years to open restaurants because there is definitely a market there – the joke is that there isn’t much else to do but go out to eat. And that’s what I did!

While I did enjoy some things that weren’t on the healthy eating plan, I found that I did so in moderation. This is so key to maintaining the weight once it’s off. I will always want these things to eat because they are so enjoyable in my life but now I know I can enjoy and walk away feeling satisfied.

One day I was making the hour-long drive from my mother’s place to Houston. I forgot to eat lunch and it was 2pm. I was hungry and knew I wouldn’t be eating until 7pm. There aren’t many healthy choices along I-45 – think one long fast food chain for 40 miles. I saw a convenience store and took up the challenge to find a healthy alternative. I bought water, a small wedge of cheese, and some almonds. Doesn’t seem like much but it was very satisfying and held me over until my French dinner of mussels and fries.

Now I’m back and I’ve fallen back into my eating routine with ease. Never thought I would see that day when I could spend a few days of indulgence and then fall happily back in line.

How do you handle a diet when traveling?

Headin’ to H’town

The diet will be somewhat on hold for the next few days while I head south to my hometown, Houston. Planning to hit all my favorite restaurants while I’m home. Moderation will be key to not indulging too much.  Shipley’s, Jason’s, Star, La Mexicana, and of course Cafe Rabelais. Oh, and Sonic!

I’ll be out of the blogging world until next week. So y’all be good. :)

TRACKING ALONG

Michelle over at Those Last 75 Pounds has been steadfastly tracking her food and exercise. And it’s inspired me to do the same. I’ve been pretty good about the workouts through my log at DailyMile. However, the food thing can be a challenge because you have to take the time to put in each and every thing you ate that day. A ha! There lies the reason why I have to do this. I want to see why I’m not losing weight. I have my suspicions but keeping track only helps to identify the culprits (cinnamon toast and peanut butter cups).

Being Accountable

I’m heading to Houston in a few days to see my family and spend time with friends. I realized (again) that I haven’t lost any weight since my wedding in August. And before that it took me nearly a year to lose 20 pounds. I was learning how to retrain my body but now it’s time to use those tools at the next level. By tracking my food and workouts, I can look for any patterns that will help me see the details in this big picture of weight loss.

Honesty is the best policy

I’ve got to start being honest with myself in order to see this thing through to the end. For the most part I eat well. I enjoy fruits and veggies and get enough protein for my semi-vegetarian diet. But I’m over 40 and it’s harder to take off the weight without diligently focusing on calorie and fat intake. I’ve got over 20 years of bad eating habits to change, while combating the challenges of a body that’s getting older. It’s not easy. There are new truths I have to face each day so after a while I need a break to curl up in front of the TV and enjoy an NCIS marathon. (I am not turning into Liz Lemon – even though I yelled out “Gibbs” before she did.) Taking a break is good but sometimes mine last longer than they should. So basically I need to keep working out, keep a keen eye on what I eat, and enjoy shorter breaks in between. Yeah, I got this.
